Motorcycle accidents tend to result in severe injuries, as motorcyclists are barely protected compared to drivers of cars and trucks. Common injuries include brain and spinal injuries, paralysis, disfiguring abrasions, and fractures. Medical costs for such injuries may be astronomical and the motorcyclist’s ability to seek compensation for an accident caused by another may be limited. The Law Offices of Kevin J. Dolley works with motorcyclists to remove the physical and financial burdens of injuries resulting from such accidents by seeking to obtain full financial compensation.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

In 2006, nearly 5,000 people were killed in motorcycle accidents. About three-fourths of these accidents involved a collision with another vehicle, usually a passenger car, while one-fourth involved a motorcycle colliding with the roadway or a fixed object. Most of the multiple vehicle accidents were caused by the driver of the other vehicle violating the motorcycle right-of-way. In single vehicle accidents, on the other hand, motorcycle rider error was the predominant cause. Nearly half of all accidents involved alcohol. Injury occurred in over 95% of all accidents and nearly half of the accidents involved more than a minor injury.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal protective equipment, or “motorcycle gear,” serves the functions of improved visibility, abrasion resistance, impact protection, and weather protection. PPE items include helmets, gloves, jackets, pants, boots, goggles or helmet visor, ear plugs, and vests. In fact, the use of safety helmets is the single most important factor in reducing and preventing head and neck injuries, according to a 2006 study. However, in that year 60% of motorcyclists were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. In Missouri, any operator or rider of a motorcycle must wear protective headgear while the motorcycle is in motion. Such headgear must also meet certain standards.

Training and License

A 2006 study showed that a significant portion of the nearly 5,000 persons killed in motorcycle accidents were without a motorcycle license, without any license, or had their license revoked. In Missouri, anyone driving a motorcycle must have a Class M motorcycle license or instruction permit.
