T-Bone Accidents
A T-bone accident, also known as a broadside collision or side impact crash, occurs when two vehicles collide and form a figure resembling the letter T. Such collisions are 2.5 times more likely to result in serious injuries than a rear-end crash and generally more likely to result in more severe injuries than other types of accidents. More than half of all fatalities caused by crashes between passenger cars occur in side impacts. SUVs increase the rate of fatalities, since these vehicles are heavier and more destructive to passenger cars and their occupants.
Some common causes of T-bone accidents include the following:
- Inattention
- Failure to stop at a stop sign
- Ignoring a red light or running a stoplight
- Talking on a cell phone
- Intoxication
Common injuries resulting from T-bone accidents may include:
- Skull fracture
- Pelvic fracture
- Brain and head injury
- Neck injury
- Spinal cord injury
- Torso and chest injury
A car’s design and safety features may decrease the likelihood of a T-bone crash and resulting injuries and even fatalities. The following features may increase your chances of survival:
- Side-curtain airbags
- Torso airbags
- High side impact rating
- Structurally sound sides
